As they were all eating, Amber brought out a small bowl of spinach that she’d prepared especially for William. Lucy made a strange face and said, “That is an odd preference. Most people don’t even like spinach. I for one do not.”
Lucy watched William in fascination as he ate his spinach. When he was about halfway through the spinach, Lucy offered him a Balsam Pear. William smiled and said, “Thank you. Balsam Pears are in season. You should have one.”
“I am not hungry,” Lucy told him. “I am content to just watch you eat.”
William could see that he wouldn’t be able to put off the inevitable. He looked at Lucy and said, “I am sorry. I don’t mean to offend you, but I don’t actually like Balsam Pears. In fact, I hate them. Even the smell of them makes me sick!”
“That’s too bad,” Lucy replied. ……
