“No…” My voice was hoarse, thin and weak. I lurched forward, but Wren held me fast.
“You can’t,” she hissed, eyes wet and furious. “That’s not a doorway—it’s a death sentence!”
“Then why is he still alive?” I shot back, pointing at the blaze. Shapes moved within it—shadows twisting in ways that didn’t belong to stone or flame.
Wren’s grip tightened. For once, her sharp tongue faltered, replaced by something close to fear. “Because whatever’s in there doesn’t want him dead. Not yet.”.....
