I followed him a short way off the camp, to the edge of shadow where the light couldn’t quite reach. The silence stretched thin between us. Finally, he turned, his eyes hard as steel.
“Don’t insult me, Vivian.” His voice was low, measured, more threatening than if he’d yelled. “You came back alone. Wren didn’t just ‘scout ahead.’ What happened?”
The lie I’d practiced was lodged in my throat. Under his stare, it shriveled. My fingers twitched at my side. I felt like a child again, cornered with dirt on my hands, the truth burning holes in my skin......
