Ashes in the Halls

“Enough! This intruder is coming to divide us, and you,” her gaze met mine, icy and merciless, “look all too eager to act out his play.”
A dozen eyes turned to me. Some skeptical, some eager for a scapegoat. My heart pounded in my chest, but I lifted my chin.
“I don’t bow to whispers and shadows,” I said, my voice firm even as my hand curled tightly at my side. “If you have proof, produce it. Otherwise, stop pointing fingers like frightened children.”
The hooded figure’s head tilted again, the faintest gesture of approbation in the motion. “Brave words,” he said in a low voice that seemed to address me alone. “But bravery alone will not stop what’s coming.”.....
