Gideon was standing apart, with his jaw clenched, his sword still sheathed but ready. He hadn’t looked away from the burnt gate once. At last he said, “This was not sabotage. This was a claim.”
“A claim?” I asked.
He turned to me then, his gaze steady. “They burned the gate not to weaken us, but to brand us. To say, I was here. I can reach you anytime I want.”
His words sunk like stones in the silence. Around us, the soldiers lowered their heads, some in anger, some in fear. A commander cleared his throat, rallying his men. “We’ll rebuild. In the morning, we’ll have another barricade.”.....
