“I hate piers,” Wren mutters.
I grin. “Yeah? Hate keeps you on your toes.”
She laughs, but it’s a thin one. “Toes won’t help if someone gets you from behind.”
“That’s why we go back-to-back,” I say, drifting closer. “You handle what comes at us. I got your six.”
She nods at the water, a bit tense. “And if it comes from below?”
I glance down too, but the ripples are already gone. “Then we make it up as we go. Like always.”.....
