Nobody ever thinks of what happened in Portugal, and I think that's partly due to the government's lack of reaction. Unlike Australia, who responded with a sleuth of laws encouraging a hard-lined stance that would drive political discussions for the next decade, the Portuguese government issued condolences and, well, that was it.

Some of the people protested, grieved beyond belief, but that quickly died down and became no more than passive-aggressive complaints thrown over coffee or at the eventual street interview. Essentially, there was a lack of meaningful action, least of all violent.

Some people would argue it had a massive influence on the elections three years later, changing the government from one moderate party to the one right beside it, but that would really be ……
