That single ephemeral burst of happiness and joy was a feeling Michael would chase after for many years to come, unable to either understand or reproduce it.

Alas, that can often be the painful reality of a truly loving moment.

My personal opinion of that particular situation was that Griffin didn’t want to fight. I’ve seen enough leaders trying to maintain face through bluff and posture to be confident that, in that one instance, my interpretation was clearly different from Michaels’. I truly believe that his perception was wrong. That Griffin was truthful and simply unable to humble himself, first in the way Jake demanded, and then in the manner that Eleanor expected.
