Infuriated, he moves back and forth on the drawing-room as Jane sat down in silence, trying to finish her tea. The woman had been quiet from when they were inside the room in Sampaguita, to him talking to Madame Blaire—getting her out of the pleasure house, then on their way to his lodgings. He does not want to go the Theodore’s lodgings because he does not want to witness how comfortable is Amelia there.
He should not be mad with X but he can’t help himself. The woman he is searching for is right under his nose. He understands the man has other things to do but he is not as observant as he was before if he did not get to notice Jane around.
Frustrated, he opened the door. “Aren’t they here yet?” he yelled.
George—his footman—hurriedly went to him. “Not yet, Sir.”
