Alice inched closer to Mortimer, her eyes wet with tears and her supple fingers reaching out for his own. She had never looked so beautiful, but there were signs of tremendous agony on her lovely face. Her eyes seemed to accuse Mortimer of a great crime.
"I trusted you. I thought you would save me," she spoke in a cracking voice. "But you abandoned me. I died… all alone in the cold."
"I didn't know! I didn't know you were going to face Leraje. I… never would have let you face him, if I had known," Mortimer cried out.
"You abandoned me because you were too afraid to face Leraje. Because I never did matter to you."
"Alice, how can you say that?" Mortimer fought through his pain and crawled back on his feet. "I…never wanted to lose you."
