Despite his annoyance, Reymen slept well and rose just after Jorick. They fed on wildlife, then the guards did a final scan to make sure they still had the trail.

"There's another scent." One of them glanced back the way they'd come. "Six furlongs back. Perhaps a mile."

Reymen breathed deeply, sorting past the smell of the moldy hay, the horses, the vampires, the trees, the grass, the damp earthon through layers of scents, but he could detect no one else.

Because I'm not a tracker.

"As I said, you'll get to meet the mysterious third vampire soon enough." Jorick mounted his steed. "Come. He will catch up or he won't."

The guards hurried to obey while Reymen glared. "You knew he was following us?"

"As you should have. Unless your skills or wit are lacking." He smirked, then his face dropped back t……
