They spent yet another day hiding away from the sun. Reymen's dreams were dark, but Catalina and Filippo danced at the edges. He tried to forget them; still, he saw snatches of what might have been truth. Or perhaps his own imagination.

When he woke, he told himself that was the case, but guilt gnawed at him. He saw Catalina, cheeks damp with tears, hair fallen around her shoulders. Her words were strange, but the meaning was clear as she begged Filippo to kill her. "It is my only salvation."

That was when he'd proposed the plan; to run and never look back, to escape to a new continent, half a world away, and disappear into the wilderness. No fine things, no beautiful houses, no silk or shiny gold.

She'd thrown her arm around him, still sobbing. She'd give all those things up if only it meant……
