Slowly, Caldwell opened the box and was amazed at what he saw there. It was, in fact, the jade that Aurora had won in the market, only it had been carved and polished; an exact miniature replica of their home, complete with two figurines in the garden. Caldwell looked closer and was happy to discover that they bore a very close resemblance to him and Aurora.
Caldwell’s heart beat fast in his chest. On the one hand, his gratitude and happiness were beyond measure. On the other hand, he felt ashamed of the way that he had treated her. Not only had he raped and beaten her, but he had made a spectacle of her by marching her, naked, in front of their housekeeper and his friend. She had tried to explain the misunderstanding, but he hadn’t even given her an opportunity to speak…
