“Hey,” Jason called out, snapping me out of my trance. “Are you okay, Kaylene?”
“Y-yes,” I said. “I was just worried about the others.”
“I’m sure they’ll be fine,” he reassured. I almost wanted to believe him.
“I know they will,” I added, mostly for my own benefit. I did not want to dive back into a pool of spiraling thoughts, so I tried for a different conversation. “You told me that you turned into a wolf the moment moonlight touched you. Is that right?”
“Yes,” Jason replied.
“The moon wasn’t at its fullest by then. Why did you turn at all? And… Why were your eyes burning?” I asked and I realized that I had a lot of questions; but I did not let that stop me from asking. “How did you follow us? How did you know it was me?”
