I stood completely unsure of what I should do. I was still holding the tray of salmon h’douvres, the entire room was now silent and staring straight at me. What was I supposed to do or say?
Mrs Dawson appeared and took the tray out of my hands. “Come with me right now, Celeste.”
I looked over at the duke who was still standing glowering at the drunken men while a few other men helped the one he had knocked on his back to stand up. The duke made no eye contact with me, he never took his eyes off the other men who had been cheering their drunken friend on.
