Chapter Fourteen: The Mother Before the Birth

Wren finally reads someone wrong, and it's the big one. She walks out to the gate certain the Warden is Ysolde grown old, a collector come for the baby, and the Warden doesn't want the child at all. She wants WREN, the first dire-blood in four hundred years who un-leashed herself, and she's offering her chair, her whole cynical case that a gathering of the hunted always dies unless it makes the world afraid. And then she plays her cruelest card: Roderic Ashfall, alive, leashed, the alpha who threw Wren away, brought to the gate to beg her to say yes.
