Uncle Tom’s Cabin is one of the few books that can lay claim to having actually changed the world. Although the American anti-slavery movement had existed at least as long as the nation itself, Stowe’s novel of 1852 galvanized public opinion as nothing had before. The book sold 10,000 copies in its first week and 300,000 in its first year. Its vivid dramatization of slavery’s cruelties so aroused readers that it is said Abraham Lincoln told Stowe her work had been a catalyst for the Civil War.

or, Life Among the Lowly (1852) The best-selling anti-slavery novel by American author Stowe that fueled the abolitionist cause in the 1850's. The book opens with Kentucky farmer Arthur Shelby facing the loss of his farm because of debts. Even though he and his wife Emily Shelby believe that they have a benevolent relationship with their slaves, Shelby decides to raise the needed funds by selling two of them--Uncle Tom, a middle-aged man with a wife and children, and Harry, the son of Emily Shelby's maid Eliza--to a slave trader. Emily Shelby is averse to this idea because she had promised her maid that her child would never be sold; Emily's son, George Shelby, hates to see Tom go because he sees the man as his friend and mentor. Pious old Uncle Tom is sold by his well-intentioned Kentucky owner Mr Shelby in financial straits. He is bought first by the idealistic Augustine St Clare. In his New Orleans house, Uncle Tom makes friends with St Clare's daughter, the saintly Little Eva, and her black friend, the impish Topsy. 'Never was born!' persisted Topsy... 'never had no father, nor mother, nor nothin'. I was raised by a speculator, with lots of others.' Tom is sold to Simon Legree, a Yankee and a brutal cotton plantation owner. Two of his female slaves pretend to escape and go into hiding. Tom will not reveal their whereabouts and Legree beats Tom. A parallel plot centres on Eliza, her child, and her husband George who escape to freedom in Canada using the Underground Railroad. Other important characters are Miss Ophelia St. Clare, a New England spinster, and Marks, the slave catcher. The religiosity of the story and its dubious conclusion, in which most of the survivors disappear back to Africa to become missionaries, contributed to a shift of attitude. 'Uncle Tom' was used pejoratively, meaning white paternalism and black passivity, undue subservience to white people on the part of black people. When modernist critics argued that literature should not aim to effect social change, Stowe's novel was far from their fields of interest. However, in the 1970s Uncle Tom's Cabin, with its strong female characters, started to attract the attention of feminist critics. Stowe's radical Christian vision, based on matriarchal values, now found defenders. Tom's passivity has been compared to Gandhi's strategy of peaceful resistance. This is a tale of how slavery has affected America. Uncle Tom, an unlearned, pious slave, lives out the Christianity of which his masters are boasting but not living up to. The author, Harriet Beecher Stowe captures the heart of the abolitionists of her day with this captivating story of a black male slave who would rather die than dishonor his heavenly master, God Himself. He is described as profoundly Christian, and he affects positively all the lives around him. He stands as the embodiment of Jesus' beatitudes of Matthew 5. This book is a literary masterpiece that is comparable to da Vinci's Mona Lisa. While many may consider Uncle Tom a Christian hero and martyr, others believe he is a passive and subservient character created from Stowe's romantic racism. The latter claim does not do justice to the book which also chronicles the courageous escape of a noble Black couple and their son who escapes by means of the famous Underground Railroad. Stowes' own life is a testimony to her stand on slavery issues. She was the daughter and wife of abolitionists, and she herself helped many slaves escape their misery. This very book is the product of the stance she took against the legal oppressors of the African race in this country. It is a phenomenal American achievement.--Submitted by Ron Stimphil
(1859) A historical novel set in 18th-century New England, this novel explores New England history, highlights the issue of slavery, and critiques the Calvinist theology in which Stowe was raised. Due to similarities in setting, comparisons are often drawn between this work and Nathaniel Hawthorne's The Scarlet Letter (1850). However, in contrast to Hawthorne's work, The Minister's Wooing is a "sentimental romance"; its central plot revolves around courtship and marriage. Moreover, Stowe's exploration of the regional history of New England deals primarily with the domestic sphere, the New England response to slavery, and the psychological impact of the Calvinist doctrines of predestination and disinterested benevolence. INTRODUCTION. The author has endeavoured in this story to paint a style of life and manners which existed in New England in the earlier days of her national existence. Some of the principal characters are historic: the leading events of the story are founded on actual facts, although the author has taken the liberty to arrange and vary them for the purposes of the story. The author has executed the work with a reverential tenderness for those great and religious minds who laid in New England the foundations of many generations, and for those institutions and habits of life from which, as from a fruitful germ, sprang all the present prosperity of America. Such as it is, it is commended to the kindly thoughts of that British fireside from which the fathers and mothers of America first went out to give to English ideas and institutions a new growth in a new world. H. B. STOWE. 18 Montague Street, Russell Square, August 25, 1859.

"f**k, I wanna put you on your knees" I hear the words slip out and before I can apologize because it feels forward, "What's stopping you?" I can almost hear her smile in my ear, and I immediately push her down on her knees, she yelps slightly in surprise but is grinning up at me, her t**s popping out of her shirt, her hands on my hips she clutches me with a moan, I lean down and take her chin, "What's that my little pet? Did you want your teachers c**k?" "Yes Teacher" she whimpers back, trying to kiss me, I push her back with a smirk, she moans, I lean in and kiss her gently. "Then tell your Teacher how much you want it" Student teacher relationships are strictly forbidden at B's Ballroom Dance Studio, but that doesn't stop Melanie from fantasizing about her dance teacher Erek, who has an eye for her too, told from both perspectives, they say dance is a vertical expression of a horizontal desire, what will happen when the desire becomes too strong...
