Marionette
READING AGE 18+
The night air at the Edgefield bus station is thick with the scent of rain and desperation, a welcome change from the stifling atmosphere of a home turned into a religious prison. Twenty-one-year-old Alice Woodhouse is finally running. Behind her lies a deranged mother lost to the bottom of a bottle and the dark echoes of "cleansing" rituals; ahead of her lies the neon-and-shadow world of the Crow’s Nest Circus.
Alice isn't just escaping her mother, but she’s also looking for the man who has been haunting her fever dreams, ones that have been growing more passionate each time. But the Crow’s Nest is no ordinary carnival. Led by the enigmatic Madame Yora and owned by the dangerously charming Mr. Crow, it is a place where the tents are deceptively normal on the outside and larger and darker on the inside.
As Alice is drawn into the troupe’s orbit, she finds herself caught between two magnetic forces. There is Zachary, the devastatingly handsome incubus whose touch is a literal healing balm for the circus’s elite client, a man whose intimate encounters Alice can "feel" through a strange, psychic tether. Then there is Hugh, the towering, gentle protector who offers the quiet safety she has craved her entire life.
But in a world built on illusions, freedom comes with a steep price. As the Full Moon’s Ball approaches, Alice must navigate a labyrinth of magic, jealousy, and the lingering shadows of her past. In the black tent of the Crow’s Nest, she will discover that becoming a "real" woman is more dangerous than she ever imagined, and that some cages are made of silk and starlight rather than iron bars.
