After escaping the hell of life with a half-sister, Miranda finds herself living with her aunt, surrounded by five cousins, two little cousins and an older sister.
Although her aunt's family is not very wealthy, she leads a peaceful life, keeping away from the others, with whom she thinks she has nothing in common, by reading novels in their presence, while maintaining an iron-clad relationship with friends she meet outside home.
She accepts no male presence in her circle of friends, except for one boy whom she considers to be anything but masculine. Her life is divided between school, where she constantly sets herself challenges to be the best and meets up with friends with whom she can have fun and be herself, The home, where she feels she has no place and spends her time reading, and the cultural club, where she learns to challenge herself and perfect her practice of a tradition she knows nothing about.
But this balance is soon upset by the arrival of a cousin with whom she becomes increasingly close, to the point where she finds it hard to distinguish where the boundaries of their relationship lie.
