“You wouldn’t think such a small woman could be so strong,” Cole said, glancing back at Helena. “I couldn’t even resist.”
I laughed, looking up at him. He smiled down at me, leaning in a bit closer. “Want to show me the steps?” he asked.
I hesitated, knowing this dance was more intimate than usual, but the alcohol had loosened my inhibitions. I felt a sudden desire to try something different. Smiling cheekily, I turned around and pressed my back against his front.
I pushed my long red hair over my shoulder and began moving my hips slowly. As I turned around, my feet glided effortlessly over the dry leaves and branches. I placed my hands on his chest, sliding them down his body and feeling the firmness of his muscles underneath.
Cole’s crooked smile grew as I kept one hand on him, walking around him and trailing my fingers lightly across his chest. His gaze was intense, almost hungry. It was the only way I could describe it.
As I moved around him, I guided his arms to wrap around me and slid an arm around his waist, showing him how to sway together with the rhythm. The music flowed through us, and the alcohol made it easy to push aside the confusing feelings he stirred in me, letting me enjoy the moment. But then, over his shoulder, I caught sight of someone watching us.

With his father, the king, dead, Cole ascends the throne determined to punish those responsible. Convinced the pagans are to blame, he sets out to end their lives, but the fight nearly costs him his life. On the verge of death, he is saved by the very people he despises. Yet as Cole begins to witness their way of life, he starts to understand why his father never sought to eradicate them. Of course, it doesn’t hurt that a fierce, red-haired woman has captured his attention. What he doesn’t yet realize, however, is how desperately she longs to see him dead.
