Leaving the safety and comfort of the willows behind, Croix, Derrik, and I trudged on towards the mountains. The land became a dense, stinky marsh for as far as the eye could see. Midges and odd-looking purple beetles with red pincers swarmed tracts of mud in thick clouds. Though I actively avoided them, my skin crawled.……
