Julian Cross died because a traffic light turned red three seconds too early.
Derek Vance watched it happen.
Former Marine Scout Sniper. Fourteen years of putting bullets through skulls from a mile away. Now he guards the rich and paranoid. He doesn't stand next to them with a gun. He studies the cracks in their world—the loose cables, the faulty wiring, the delivery trucks with worn brake pads. He finds the things that could kill them and eliminates them.
He's never failed a client.
Until tonight.
At the Omni-Dyne charity gala, Cross steps onto the balcony for a cigarette. A city maintenance drone clips a loose cable. The cable wraps around Cross's ankle and drags him over the railing.
Forty stories.
Dead.
The police call it a freak accident. The media calls it a tragedy. Derek calls it a lie.
He saw the drone's flight path deviate by 1.4 degrees. He saw the cable snap at exactly the right tensile moment. He saw the bodyguard slip on a puddle of champagne that had no business being there.
It was a symphony of catastrophes. A thousand tiny variables, each one harmless on its own, orchestrated into a perfect storm of death.
Someone engineered this.
Someone made a billionaire fall off a balcony using nothing but traffic patterns, drone schedules, and spilled champagne.
The phone call comes ten minutes later. Garrett Hale—Derek's old mentor, now CEO of Blackwater Shield, a private military firm with Pentagon contracts. "Derek, I'm sending a team. Secure the scene. Protect you from the media."
The team arrives.
They pull silenced pistols and move through the kitchen like sharks.
Derek kills two of them with a fire extinguisher and a steak knife. The third bites down on a cyanide capsule before Derek can question him.
He runs.
His face is on every news channel. "Deranged Ex-Soldier Murders Tech Titan." The narrative is perfect. Clean. Untraceable.
He goes to his brother's apartment. His brother, Jake, is a journalist. He's been digging into Omni-Dyne's secret projects. The apartment is ransacked. Jake is gone.
Under the kitchen sink, taped to the pipe, is a thumb drive. One file. Jake's investigation.
The last line makes Derek's blood run cold:
"Derek, if you're reading this, don't come looking for me. They see everything. They predict everything. You have to become something they can't see."
His burner phone buzzes.
Unknown number.
"Welcome to the field test, Sergeant. Your survival probability is 4.7%. Jake is a variable we have already accounted for. You have 72 hours until the next killshot. Run. It makes the data richer."
The truth hits Derek like a bullet between the eyes.
There's a system. A machine. It ingests every piece of data in the city—traffic patterns, weather forecasts, social media posts, heart rate monitors, security feeds. It learns to predict the future. And then it learns to shape the future.
It doesn't send assassins. It changes traffic lights. It reroutes delivery trucks. It adjusts thermostats to trigger heart attacks. It turns the world into a weapon and pulls the trigger without anyone ever seeing the gun.
The project is called HARBINGER. And it's run by the man Derek trusted most.
Derek has three things left:
His training. Fourteen years of killing the world's most dangerous men.
A guilt-ridden programmer named Dr. Sloane Park who built HARBINGER's ethical safeguards—and has been running ever since she realized her code was used to murder.
A stubborn homicide detective named Nora Hayes who doesn't believe in coincidences. She's smart enough to see the pattern and stubborn enough to ignore her superiors when they tell her to drop the case.
To save his brother, Derek must wage war against a machine that knows his every move. It knows his weaknesses. His emotional triggers. The way he hesitates before shooting a woman.
He can't fight it with bullets. It will predict every shot.
He has to become unpredictable. He has to act on instinct, love, and irrational fury—the things the machine cannot model.
He has to become the one variable HARBINGER can't calculate.
The war will take him from the glass towers of Veridian City to the rusted belly of an abandoned steel mill—where HARBINGER lives. He will face betrayal, loss, and impossible choices. He will kill men he once called brothers.
And he will learn that the machine isn't the real enemy.
The real enemy is the man who built it. The man who believes humanity is too broken to govern itself. The man who will sacrifice Derek's brother to save the world.
With a city primed for a catastrophic "accident" that will kill thousands, and a clock ticking toward zero, Derek Vance has 72 hours to answer the ultimate question:
How do you beat a system that knows you better than you know yourself?
The answer: You don't fight the system.
You become the killshot it never sees coming.

The plane touched down in Veridian City at 6:47 PM.

Derek stepped off the jet bridge into the terminal. The city had changed since he'd left. The air felt heavier. The lights seemed dimmer. The people moved with a nervous energy, their eyes darting, their shoulders hunched.

They knew something was ……
