I managed major projects for a living. For three years, I also managed to keep one part of my life private: a romance with an anonymous man I knew only as Mr. M. We had built it through late-night messages, private jokes, and the small details people usually forget. Neither of us had offered a résumé or an address. I thought the anonymity kept the relationship honest. Then Derek Hayes, my boss and a habitual thief of my work, appeared in the same limited-edition cufflinks Mr. M had photographed. Minutes later, Derek used our private joke. I blocked Mr. M, filed my resignation, and walked away convinced that both my career and my relationship had been a fraud.
