The city of Port Ember is sinking. Block by block, street by street, the ground is swallowing itself whole. The official story is aging infrastructure. The truth is a frequency—a weaponized sound that turns solid bedrock into quicksand.
Damon Kincaid knows this truth. He can feel it.
A former Naval interrogator, Damon was medically discharged with a rare neurological condition: he perceives sound as physical agony, sees frequencies as shifting colors, and experiences low vibrations as crippling, skull-splitting pain. A car backfire drops him to his knees. A ship's horn makes him vomit. His curse makes the modern world a battlefield of torment.
Now he scrapes by as a harbor master, living in a soundproofed shipping container, fighting to keep his nine-year-old daughter alive in a sterile hospital room. He has one rule: never listen to the city's groaning.
Then the hospital collapses.
The pediatric wing—his daughter's floor—plunges into a sinkhole. Security footage shows one woman walking away from the devastation: Rhea Kincaid. Damon's estranged sister. A brilliant acoustical engineer who once worked for the city's ruling corporation.
The police arrest Damon for conspiracy. After all, the weapon used the same acoustic principles as the one the Navy tested on him. He escapes custody—not to run, but to hunt.
The trail leads him into the Undercity, a forgotten labyrinth of tunnels and catacombs beneath Port Ember. In the echoing dark, his curse becomes his only weapon. He can hear the city's stress fractures. He can track his sister by the rhythm of her heartbeat. He can sense the hidden machinery that is slowly tearing the city apart.
But when he finds Rhea, the truth is worse than treason.
His sister isn't the enemy. She's the only one trying to stop the Prometheus Corporation from intentionally collapsing the entire city to seize the geothermal energy beneath it. The sinkholes aren't accidents. They are calibrations. And the man pulling the trigger is Julian Cross—the charismatic, ruthless heir to the Prometheus empire.
But Julian has leverage. He has taken Damon's daughter. Not as a hostage—as a biological anchor. If Julian triggers the final collapse, the pressure drop will kill her instantly. If Rhea sabotages the machine, the sonic shockwave will shatter every window in the city—and her fragile lungs will collapse from the vacuum.
Damon has seven days. He is hunted by the police, hunted by Julian's private army, and hunted by the ghost of his dead commanding officer—a consciousness trapped in the chip embedded in his brain, slowly trying to overwrite his personality.
His sister wants to destroy the city to save millions. The corporation wants to destroy the city to get richer. The ghost in his head wants to use him as a weapon.
And his daughter is trapped in the crossfire.
Damon must find a third path. A Sinkhole he can control. A frequency that shatters everything—without killing the one person he loves most.

The safe house was a converted bunker buried in the hills outside Port Ember.

Frank Hollis had built it years ago, back when he still believed the world was worth preparing for. Concrete walls. Steel-reinforced doors. A ventilation system that could filter out anything short of a nuclear blast. It was cold, cramped……
