I thought I was going to lose everything. The thought had been eating at me for weeks, quietly twisting inside my chest until I could barely breathe around it. Everywhere I turned, another woman was announcing she was pregnant, holding a newborn, or talking excitedly about the cub she and her mate were going to have. And every time I heard it, I felt like something inside me broke a little more. I wanted a cub.Not just because I wanted to be a mother, but because I was terrified that without one, I wouldn't be enough for Hawk. What if he got tired of waiting? What if he realized he wanted someone who could give him the family he deserved? What if one day he looked at me and decided I wasn't the mate he wanted after all? Those thoughts had become my constant companions.I had even convinced myself that I could take a child and claim it as my own. I knew how wrong it was, but fear doesn't always care about right and wrong. Sometimes, fear only cares about keeping the one thing you love from being taken away. Hawk kept trying to calm me.“Baby, we've only been together a short time. Give it time. Let us have some time for us before we decide to try for a cub.”I wanted to believe him. I really did. But the fear wouldn't leave. Then everything changed. One moment, I was consumed by my own worries. The next, a terrified human girl was brought into our lives, and suddenly my problems didn't seem so important anymore.Hicks sent her to us because she needed protection, from her own mother and the people her mother called friends. They were determined to get Becky back. And they would do whatever it took.I didn't know then just how much this girl was about to change all of our lives.Becky knew about the supernatural world. She knew creatures like us existed. But knowing something exists and actually being forced to live through it are two completely different things. She wasn't prepared for what happened next. None of us were. And now, after everything she'd witnessed, everything that had been taken from her, I could see the hope draining from her eyes. That frightened me more than anything. Because Becky had been strong. She had fought. She had survived. But now? Now she looked like someone who didn't know how to keep going. I turned toward Hawk, desperately searching his face for an answer.“Hawk…" what now?” My voice cracked. “What are we supposed to do? She's lost whatever hope she had. I don't know how to help her.”Hawk looked at me, and the love and pride shining in his eyes nearly brought me to tears. “Baby, all you can do is be there for her. Hold her tight. When she calls out for you, make sure you're right there. I know it's going to be hard, but right now, you may be the only thing she has.”I swallowed hard. I wasn't sure I was enough. Becky was a strong human girl, but after everything she'd been through, I didn't know if even her strength could survive this. I looked at her, my heart aching for a girl who had already lost so much. Then I looked up toward the moon.“Moon Goddess…” My voice was barely a whisper. “What am I supposed to do?” Tears burned my eyes. “She has already been through so much. How much more can one person take?”I closed my eyes and whispered the question that terrified me most.“Can she really come back from this?” For the first time, I realized something. Maybe I wasn't meant to save Becky. Maybe I was simply meant to be the person who refused to let her face the darkness alone.
