The moment Isabella bolted from the room, I surged to my feet, the tremor of my rising anger threatening to shake the very walls of the infirmary.
Her escape was so abrupt, such a raw display of her pain, that even the stoic Ulric and the ever-cynical Damien were momentarily stunned into silence. No one, however, was quick enough to intercept her desperate flight. Not even the foolish guards stationed by the door.
My poor mate. She bore the weight of everything, the burden of the unknown and a future shrouded in ambiguity, all upon her slender shoulders. The sight of her tears, the raw despair etched on her face, twisted my insides with a pang that transcended time itself.
A snarl rippled through my throat, a guttural rumble ……
