The going through the woods was rocky, but downhill.

Mallory's eyes were as wide as they could be, but she could not see a thing. The night was like ganache.

No animals scurried past. The forest held its breath for them.

She clung to Trey as her lifeline. After a minute, the act seemed natural. She'd depended on Trey in far more threatening situations, she should be able to now.

Her rationalization complete, she held his hand and followed his voice commands.

Trey broke his minute of silence. His voice floated dark and seductive from his throat. “Now might be a good time to cover some lost ground."

“What ground?" she said.

What did he have in mind? Leave it to Trey to bring things up when she had no choice but to listen.

“About us."

“Trey, there is no 'us.'"

“There was."
