Arjun ripped off his headset, his chest heaving. The cybercafé was silent, the other players gone. Sanjay sat slumped in his chair, staring at the floor. Meera’s eyes were red, her phone abandoned on the table. Ravi was nowhere to be seen.“We were so close,” Sanjay whispered.Arjun’s phone buzzed. A message from an unknown number: “Second place. No prize. Don’t contact us again. – Syndicate.”He wanted to scream, to smash the phone, but all he could do was sit there, the weight of failure crushing him. Ten lakhs. Priya’s treatment. Gone.Meera stood, wiping her eyes. “I’m sorry, Arjun. I… I have to go.”Sanjay followed, mumbling something about checking on Ravi. Arjun stayed, staring at the blank screen. Hours passed, or maybe minutes—he couldn’t tell. His phone buzzed again. His mother.“Arjun, come to the hospital. It’s Priya.”He ran, the city blurring around him. The hospital’s fluorescent lights burned his eyes as he stumbled into Priya’s room. She was there, smaller than he remembered, her red bandana bright against the white sheets. His mother sobbed quietly in the corner.“Arjun,” Priya whispered, her voice barely audible. “Did you win?”He knelt beside her, taking her hand. “We tried, Priya. We tried so hard.”She smiled, weak but genuine. “You’re my hero anyway.”The monitors beeped, then flatlined. Nurses rushed in, but Arjun knew it was over. Priya was gone.
