A new home

The Packs Connection 1418 words 2025-03-16 18:20:15

The summer heat pressed against Nova’s skin as she lifts another box into the trunk of Nina’s car. The backseat was already packed with bags of clothes, books, and ll the things that she would need for her first year at college. She wiped a stray lock of dark hair from her face, exhaling heavily as she turned to glance at her childhood home one last time.

Her parents stood on the porch, their expressions etched with concern. Her mother’s arms were crossed tightly, while her father’s jaw was set in a hard line. “You know how we feel about this, Nova,” her mother said. “Humans are reckless. They don’t understand our kind. If they ever found out what you are—”

“They won’t,” nova said, “I can take care of myself.”

Her father sighs. “Stick with your own, at least. There are other wolves at that school. Don’t go trusting humans so easily.”

“I know, Dad.” Nova stepped forward, wrapping her arms around both of them. “I’ll be just fine. It’s only college.” as she glances up looking for approval. Her mother wasn't convinced, but she hugged her anyway. “Be careful, sweetheart.”

“I will,” Nova promised before pulling away. With one last glance at her childhood home, she climbed into the passenger seat, ready to begin her new life.

“You sure you’re ready for this?” Nina asked, leaning against the car . She twirled her car keys around her finger, her auburn curls catching the sunlight. “Because I feel like any second now, your mom’s going to come running out here, demanding you stay home forever.” they both laughed, but there was truth in Nina’s words. Her parents had been reluctant to let her go, even though she wasn’t moving that far. Their pack was so very tight knit, and the idea of her living amongst strangers—humans, no less—made them uneasy. Still, she insisted. She needed this, A chance to be her own person, outside the expectations of the pack. And if she was being honest, a chance to have some space from Dorian. They've been together for years, and while she still cared for him now as she did when they first met (they have known eachother since childhood, since they were in the same pack and all) , she wasn’t sure what the distance would mean for them. Maybe she needed to find that out too..

“I’m ready,” Nova said with a grin, but her voice held the slightest tremor of uncertainty. Nina caught it but didn’t press. Instead, she hopped into the driver’s seat and started the engine.

“Alright then, let’s get you out of here before you change your mind.”

As they arrived, The campus buzzed with energy. Students walking around, some reuniting with old friends, others were just arriving boxes and duffel bags. Those were the other freshman. Nina Noticed immediately the smell of Wolf. " Can you smell it, Nova? Wolf. Not our pack, That sounds exciting to me! " Nova adjusted her grip on a suitcase as she and Nina made their way toward her dorm building, trying to figure out which one was hers. Nova could definatley smell the other wolves on campus. Not an intense smell , But it was present. Way more human scent though... she had to be careful, she knew what exposing herself to humans could do to her family, her entire pack even. Her mother and father were extremely worried that she would get found out. It took weeks and weeks of her begging for them to allow her to attend this college. They wanted her to stay home and study online, as the other kids in her pack did. As she scanned all of the unfamiliar faces, her gaze locked onto a tall, dark-haired guy standing near a group of students. His striking blue eyes met hers for a brief moment, something unreadable flickering across his face before he turned away.

Nina, ever perceptive, caught the interaction and nudged her. "Ooooh, looks like college might be more exciting than you thought."

Nova rolled her eyes, shaking her head. "I have a boyfriend, remember?"

"Mm-hmm," Nina hummed, grinning. "Just saying, no harm in looking."

“This is it,” Nina announced dramatically as they arrived at Nova’s door. “Your new home. are you excited?”

Nova took a deep breath before swiping her key card and pushing the door open. "well, sort of, I''m gong to miss Dorian" She knew that was a lie. But Nina was just as much Dorians best friend as she was Novas. Plus she lived next door to him. She didn't want to put Nina in the middle of her problems with Dorian. Not like Dorian even knew there WAS a problem in the first place. The room was standard—two beds, two desks, two dressers, and a window overlooking a courtyard. Half of the room was already decorated with string lights and cozy blankets, hinting that her roommate had already settled in.

Before she could say anything, the bathroom door swung open, and a girl stepped out, towel-drying her long honey-blonde hair. She wore a loose yelow AC-DC tee shirt and ripped wide leg jeans, exuding effortless confidence. Her hazel eyes landed on Nova, and a slow smile spread across her face.

“You must be Nova,” she said, tossing the towel onto her bed. “I’m Sienna. Roommate, partner-in-crime, and general troublemaker. Welcome to the jungle.” She hoisted her hand out towards Nova.

Nova laughed, instantly warming to her. Shaking Siennas hand, she reluctantly says “Nice to meet you.”

Sienna’s gaze flickered to Nina. “And you are?”

“Nina,” she replied, crossing her arms. “Best friend, voice of reason, and professional box-carrier!”

Sienna grinned. “A very noble role, best friend. You’re a good friend for helping with the move.”

“She’d be an even better one if she actually carried more than two boxes,” Nova teased.

“Excuse me, I drove you here!” Nina shot back. “That’s enough heavy lifting.”

They all laughed, the tension of the new environment easing slightly. Nova took a moment to glance around, already feeling a little more at home.

Nina pulled her into a tight hug. "Call me later, okay? I want all the details."

"I will," Nova promised, squeezing her back.

She turned to Sienna. "Nice meeting you. Take care of her."

Sienna smirked. "Oh, don’t worry, I will."

As Nina stepped out into the hallway, she paused, giving Nova a knowing look. "Oh, and don’t forget about mystery guy from earlier."

Nova groaned. "It was nothing."

"Mmm-hmm," Nina sing-songed before waving and heading out.

Once the door clicked shut, Sienna arched an eyebrow. "Mystery guy?"

Nova sighed, sitting on her bed. "Just some guy I locked eyes with for, like, half a second. Nina likes to exaggerate."

Sienna tilted her head, intrigued. "So, what’s the deal? You got a boyfriend or something?"

Nova hesitated before nodding. "Yeah. Dorian. We’ve been together for years, but… I don’t know. Things have felt kind of stale lately. I guess I’m not sure where we’re heading."

Sienna studied her for a moment before shrugging. "Well, college is all about figuring stuff out, right?"

“So, I was actually gonna meet up with some friends later tonight,” Sienna said, perching on the edge of the bed. “Kind of a low-key get-together. You should come.”

Nova hesitated. She wasn’t sure if she was ready to dive into the social scene just yet. But Sienna seemed nice, and making friends outside of the pack was part of why she’d wanted to come here in the first place. Plus, it wasn’t like she got to hang out freely back home. Dorian always had a way of finding out where she was, what she was doing, and who she was with. It had made things complicated—made her feel suffocated. Maybe here, she could finally breathe.

“Sure,” she said finally. “Sounds fun.”

“Awesome.” Sienna smiled. “Trust me, you're going to fit right in!”

Although Nova felt some relief that she had final began to break away from her pack, she had no idea how much weight those words carried.
